Live captions for deaf and hard-of-hearing congregation members

A dedicated captioning screen at the front of the room, or personal reading on their own phone — Voco keeps deaf and hard-of-hearing members in the sermon, without a separate system.

How it works

1

Start a service

Create an event in the Voco dashboard, connect audio from your mic or sound desk, and start the stream.

2

Open the display URL

From the Share tab, copy the display URL. Open it on a dedicated screen or laptop connected to a captioning monitor.

3

Choose size and theme

Set text size large (60+), choose a high-contrast theme, and select mode=full to show more caption lines.

4

Tell your congregation

Mention it in the bulletin and welcome slide. The best captioning setup helps no one if members don't know it's there.

Everything you need, nothing you don't

On-screen captions — no phone required

Place a dedicated captioning screen at the front of the room. Voco's display URL updates in real time, large text, high contrast — deaf and HoH members can follow the sermon without looking down.

Personal phone reading

Congregation members can also scan the QR code and read captions directly on their own device. They choose the source language — captions appear live as the sermon continues.

Works with OBS, ProPresenter, and any projector

The display URL slots into OBS as a Browser Source, ProPresenter as a Web Item, or any other AV setup as a browser tab on a dedicated output. No plugin or extension needed.

Large text, high contrast, no clutter

The display URL is configurable — text size, line count, dark or light theme, and transparent background for overlay setups. Readable from across a room without squinting.

Live translation for multilingual congregations

If your congregation also includes non-English speakers, Voco translates into 150+ languages simultaneously on the same plan. Deaf and HoH members and foreign-language members are served from one setup.

No separate contract or hardware

Voco Simple is £8/week. Church plan (OBS, ProPresenter, captioning display) is £15/week. No hardware to buy, no annual commitment, and a 7-day free trial with no card required.

What a captioning screen looks like

The display URL is a browser page with no navigation, no buttons, and no distractions — just live caption text, updating line by line as the sermon continues. An example URL:

https://voco.church/c/your-church/display?lang=en&theme=dark&mode=full&size=64&lines=4

Open this URL on any browser connected to a monitor, projector, or confidence screen. Text size, line count, and theme are all adjustable from the URL itself.

Already running OBS or ProPresenter?

Add the Voco display URL as a Browser Source in OBS or a Web Item in ProPresenter, and route it to a dedicated captioning output. No plugin, no extension — just a URL.

Questions

Do deaf members need to download an app?

No. The attendee QR code opens in any browser — no app download, no account, no login. For screen-based captioning, the display URL runs in any browser on any device connected to a monitor or projector.

Can captioning and translation run at the same time?

Yes. Voco handles both simultaneously on the same subscription. Deaf and HoH members see captions in the source language; foreign-language members see translation in their chosen language — from a single stream.

Which plan do I need for the on-screen display?

The display URL is included on the Voco Church plan (£15/week). Voco Simple (£8/week) covers phone-based captioning for attendees using the QR code.

What text size and contrast settings work best?

For a captioning screen, size=64 or higher, mode=full, and lines=3 or 4 works well at typical church projection distances. Use theme=dark for bright rooms and theme=light for dim ones.

Does Voco work for BSL or ASL interpretation setups?

Voco provides live text captions — it does not provide sign language interpretation. It works alongside a BSL or ASL interpreter, not instead of one.
