Advent candle prayers for five services

A coherent set for hope, peace, joy, love, and the Christ candle—written to be brief enough for public worship and easy to prepare for live translation.

Advent customs and candle themes vary across traditions. Confirm your church's calendar, candle order, and authorised texts before placing these prayers in a service.

First candle

Hope

God of promise, when the way ahead is dim, keep us awake to your coming. Kindle hope in those who are weary, and make us people who prepare for Christ by making room for our neighbours. Amen.

Second candle

Peace

Prince of Peace, meet a world fractured by fear and violence. Begin your peace in us: soften our speech, repair our relationships, and lead us into the patient work of reconciliation. Amen.

Third candle

Joy

God of joy, thank you for good news that reaches ordinary people in ordinary places. Lift the downcast, surprise the anxious with grace, and teach us a joy generous enough to be shared. Amen.

Fourth candle

Love

God of steadfast love, you draw near rather than remain distant. Let the love we celebrate become hospitality for the stranger, protection for the vulnerable, and faithful care for those entrusted to us. Amen.

Christmas candle

Christ

Jesus, light of the world, we welcome the news of your birth. Shine in our worship and in our witness, so that our words and actions point beyond themselves to your grace and truth. Amen.

Production checklist

  • □ Confirm the reader and microphone before the service.
  • □ Give the final wording to translators and caption operators.
  • □ Put each prayer in the run sheet, not only on a presenter's phone.
  • □ Keep sentences intact on slides; do not shrink text to fit.
  • □ Rehearse candle lighting and any response together.
  • □ Keep a non-flame alternative ready where venue rules require it.
