Translate your church service into Luganda

Oluganda

Luganda is the principal language of the Baganda people and a major language of Christian worship in Uganda. Voco lets an English-speaking church add live Luganda sermon text while keeping English, Runyankore, Acholi or other Ugandan languages available separately.

The Luganda-speaking diaspora

Britain's Ugandan community is concentrated in and around London, with communities also in Leicester, Birmingham, Coventry and Manchester. Established worship includes Okusinza mu Luganda at St John's, Brownswood Park, Ekkanisa y'Oluganda serving Greater London, and the Uganda Martyrs Catholic Community. Those ministries show both the depth of Luganda worship and the need to distinguish Baganda language provision from a generic 'Ugandan' label.

Bible availability in Luganda

The Bible Society of Uganda publishes Luganda Scripture, including the Joint Ecumenical Luganda Bible, while Biblica published a revised contemporary Luganda Bible in 2014. Catholic and Protestant editions can differ in book naming and canon, so glossary review should follow the edition used by the congregation.

Using Voco for Luganda church translation

Luganda worship crosses Anglican Church of Uganda, Roman Catholic, Seventh-day Adventist and Pentecostal communities. It is not the language of every Ugandan: Acholi, Runyankore-Rukiga, Ateso and other languages may be more appropriate for different families. Ask first and let attendees choose privately.

Frequently asked questions

Do all Ugandans prefer Luganda?

No. Luganda is widely used and dominant around Buganda and Kampala, but Uganda is highly multilingual. Ask the family which language they use for Scripture and sustained teaching.

Which Luganda Bible terminology should we follow?

Use the edition your congregation already reads. The Bible Society of Uganda and Biblica publish recognised Luganda texts, and Catholic and Protestant wording may differ.

Can Luganda run alongside other Ugandan languages?

Yes. Each supported output language is a separate attendee choice, so one QR code can serve Luganda alongside English and other available Ugandan languages.
