Translate your church service into Chichewa
Chichewa
Chichewa is Malawi's national language and is also known as Chinyanja in Zambia and parts of Mozambique. Voco can make English sermons available as live Chichewa text, giving first-generation adults and visiting relatives a private way to follow without separating them from the main service.

The Chichewa-speaking diaspora
Malawian communities in Britain are spread across London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Leicester and university or NHS towns rather than concentrated in one borough. Members worship in Church of Central Africa Presbyterian traditions, Roman Catholic and Anglican parishes, Baptist and Brethren churches, Seventh-day Adventist congregations, Pentecostal churches and mixed African fellowships.
Bible availability in Chichewa
The Bible Society of Malawi publishes two major Chichewa traditions: Buku Lopatulika, first completed in the early 1920s and subsequently revised, and Buku Loyera, an interconfessional common-language Bible published in 1999 with Protestant and Catholic editions. Ask which version your congregation uses because familiar theological wording can differ.
Using Voco for Chichewa church translation
The Church of Central Africa Presbyterian is central to Malawian Protestant life, alongside Catholic, Anglican, Baptist, Brethren in Christ, Seventh-day Adventist and Pentecostal churches. Chichewa is widely understood but is not every Malawian's first language; Tumbuka, Yao, Lomwe and others may be preferable for particular families.
Frequently asked questions
Are Chichewa and Chinyanja the same?
They refer to closely related forms of the same language continuum, with country and vocabulary differences. Ask whether attendees prefer the Malawi Chichewa or Zambia Chinyanja label and test local wording.
Which Chichewa Bible should we use?
Buku Lopatulika is the older, more literal tradition; Buku Loyera is a modern common-language, interconfessional translation. Use the edition already familiar to your congregation.
Does every Malawian guest need Chichewa?
No. Malawi is multilingual. Chichewa is widely understood nationally, but Tumbuka, Yao, Lomwe or English may be a person's stronger church language. Ask rather than assuming.
