Communion prayers that serve the table

Six concise prayers for different moments around Communion, plus a framework for adapting them without making the prayer compete with the sacrament.

Use with pastoral judgement: traditions differ on who presides, the words used, and the theology of Communion. Keep your church's authorised liturgy and safeguarding practices primary; use these as preparatory or supplementary prayers where appropriate.

Gathering

Before the bread and cup

Jesus Christ, you welcome us to your table by grace. Quiet our hurry, mend what is divided in us, and turn our attention again to your self-giving love. As we receive this bread and cup, make us grateful, truthful, and ready to serve one another. Amen.

Concise

A short prayer of remembrance

Lord Jesus, we remember your life poured out in love. Meet us in this meal, deepen our trust in you, and form us into one body for the sake of the world. Amen.

Eucharistic theme

A prayer of thanksgiving

Faithful God, we thank you for creation, for covenant, and for Christ who gathers the scattered and feeds the hungry. Receive our praise. By your Spirit, make this act of remembrance bear fruit in mercy, holiness, and hope. Amen.

Before sharing

For reconciliation

God of peace, search us with kindness. Where we have wounded others, lead us toward repentance; where we carry resentment, teach us the costly freedom of forgiveness. Make this table a sign of the reconciliation you desire among us. Amen.

Sending

After Communion

God of abundant grace, thank you for feeding us with the promise of Christ. Send us from this table attentive to the lonely, generous toward the poor, patient with one another, and courageous in love. May what we have received become visible in the life we share. Amen.

Many languages

For a multilingual congregation

God of every people and language, at this table you gather us without erasing the stories that have shaped us. Help us listen across difference, honour one another, and recognise the body of Christ in neighbours whose words and customs are not our own. Make our shared meal a witness to your reconciling love. Amen.

Four-part shape

Write a prayer your congregation can follow

  1. 1. Name the grace

Begin with God’s character or the gift remembered at the table.

  2. 2. Tell the truth

Name gratitude, need, division, or hope without turning the prayer into a miniature sermon.

  3. 3. Ask for formation

Ask not only for a feeling, but for Christlike change in the gathered community.

  4. 4. Connect table to sending

Let the meal open outward into mercy, reconciliation, hospitality, and service.

Before you lead it

Say less

Read it aloud once. Remove any phrase that sounds written rather than prayed.

Make access possible

Give interpreters the final text early and use short clauses if it will be translated live.

Respect the moment

Confirm placement, presider, invitation, and denominational language with the service leader.
